Karen Pittman's Youth Today Column One More Time: Don't Pit Preschoolers Against Teens
"Clearly there is a value in investing in preparation and prevention versus waiting to intervene further down the road. And there is an undeniable value in investing early," says Karen in her latest Youth Today column. "But there is something wrongheaded and dangerous about equating prevention with early childhood and intervention with teens. We need to make sustained investments in the 'cognitive, social and emotional' development of all children."

Ready by 21 2009-2010 Webinar Series Schedule Released!
This webinar series will introduce participants to the core and advanced components of Ready by 21. This challenge calls on states and communities to change the odds for youth by changing the way they do business. This requires broadening definitions of what it means for youth to be ready, for schools and communities to be supportive and for all leaders to be engaged. This innovative series will include sessions introducing the core concepts of Ready by 21, which will be repeated.

Over 1,500 youth and community development advocates will gather in Cincinnati, Ohio from November 5-7 for the 13th Annual Search Institute® Healthy Communities Healthy Youth® Conference. The Ready by 21 National Partnership is proud to be a Signature Sponsor for this conference. Attendees will include educators, leaders of youth-serving organizations and over 400 youth. As a content contributor to the conference, the National Partnership has developed five 90-minute workshops featuring National Partners as presenters.

SAVE THE DATE: Engaging Youth in Policymaking: Lessons from State & Local Youth Councils Briefing America's Youth Councils Network presents "Engaging Youth in Policymaking: Lessons from State & Local Youth Councils," Monday, October 26, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM, Senate Hart Building, Room 902. Across the country, youth are getting a say in the policymaking process through Youth Councils: officially sanctioned groups of young people with a diverse range of life experiences who directly advise policymakers on policies and programs that impact youth. At this Capitol Hill briefing, members of America's Youth Council Network discuss lessons learned and present opportunities for the Federal Government to gain access to authentic youth voice to inform their policy decisions that impact young people.

Forum Assembles State Teams for the Fifth Youth Policy Institute On Sept 25 & 26, state teams of key legislative and executive decision makers from North Caroline, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee participated in the 5th Annual Youth Policy Institute. Co-organized by the National Conference of State Legislatures and the Forum, the event engaged the National Partners as presenters and facilitators. Each of the teams worked with their facilitator to develop a detailed action plan for young people in their state with the help of Ready by 21 tools and knowledge of the capacities of the Ready by 21 technical partners. |
